2024 CCCC Annual Convention

April 5, 2024–
Four women faculty from a first-year writing program share narratives of “saying no” (inspired by The No Club: Putting a Stop to Women’s Dead-End Work) and the new pathways that opened up for their equitable campus engagement. After these presentations, we will do a writing exercise with our audience, as we discuss not only possible responses but also stronger questions for our 2024 moment.
Presented by: Terri Taylor, Kate Bloomquist, Megan Allen, and Kasey Perkins Grady

Have you been too kind via email? Especially when a simple “no thanks.” (period—no exclamation mark) would do? This talk explores who is volunteered for university service and why it is so difficult to say a “no” effectively. Given gender disparities in service, the presenter uses real emails to facilitate discussion on communication; the session maps out the anatomy of ineffective and effective “no” responses to what Laurie Weingart identifies as “non-promotable tasks.” Further, what tools can faculty members use to both keep track of service work and determine what is worthwhile?
Missouri Humanities St. Louis Veterans Writing Workshop

A workshop facilitated by Kasey Perkins centered on what a unique metaphor is, how to get inspired, and how you can work one into a piece of creative non-fiction food writing.
Perkins brought excerpts from authors like Flannery O’Connor and Sam Andersen, along with reading from her own book, When The Dead Get Mail.
